At the sonic heart of the UT Twin48 lies a carefully selected NOS EF86 pentode vacuum tube, the last true descendant of the tubes used in the originals. Unlike modern dual-triode tubes, this pentode architecture produces dense harmonic richness, authoritative low end, and an organic presence that is instantly recognizable—the true “massive tube sound.”
Twin Mode Operation – Two microphones in one
The UT Twin48 goes far beyond simple polar pattern selection: its two distinct operating modes (47 and 48) faithfully reproduce the technical and sonic differences of the original microphones.
• 47 Mode: 47 Cardioid and Omnidirectional patterns
• 48 Mode: 48 Cardioid and Figure-of-8 patterns
Each cardioid mode delivers its own unique sonic signature:
47 Cardioid (True Cardioid): de-couples the rear diaphragm for a more open, powerful sound, increased sensitivity, greater high-frequency detail, and a wider image.
48 Cardioid (Active Cardioid): actively polarizes the rear diaphragm for a tighter, warmer, more intimate tone with slightly reduced sensitivity—highly favored for vocals.

Custom United UT K48 capsule
The UT Twin48 is equipped with an exclusive UT K48 capsule, historically correct, featuring a single backplate and dual-diaphragm design. Assembled in a clean-room environment, it uses a 6-micron Mylar diaphragm, 24k gold sputtered, and is optimized for 60 V polarization.
Its precise tuning faithfully preserves the original sonic signature: natural smoothness, absence of resonances, silky highs, and no excessive sibilance—where many reproductions fall short.
Premium United transformer and power supply
The custom-wound UT-BV8 transformer, made in the USA, adheres to the original Braunbuch specifications, using high-nickel alloy laminations and a copper Faraday shield for optimal protection against RF interference.
The external power supply is fully discrete, with separate rails for filament, high voltage, and polarization. No low-grade integrated regulators are used—only audiophile-grade components, US-made PRP resistors, premium capacitors, an over-spec’d linear transformer, and integrated EMI/RFI filtering.
The included microphone cable is the Sommer Octave 7-conductor cable (Germany), currently among the finest tube microphone cables available, specifically optimized for the UT Twin48.
